BlackBerry Service Book


What is a service book?


A service book contains information that configures how your BlackBerry smartphone interacts with the BlackBerry® Infrastructure. It also turns on specific services for your BlackBerry smartphone. The selection of service books on your BlackBerry smartphone depends upon the features provided by your wireless service provider and the IT policies set up by your organization.

The table below outlines service books that should appear on the device after Enterprise activation:

Contains information that is required to perform wireless Global Address Book searches.

Contains information that is required for BlackBerry wireless calendar operations.
Desktop [CMIME]
Contains information that is required to send messages and perform functions such as wireless email message reconciliation.
Desktop [SYNC]
Contains information that is used to wirelessly synchronize organizer databases (PIM).
Provisioning [Provisioning]
Contains information that is used to turn on or off the Enterprise Activation icon for BlackBerry Device Software 4.0 and later.

Resending a service book


Why resend a service book


You may want to resend service books to troubleshoot various issues with BlackBerry wireless synchronization:
  • Problems sending or receiving messages from the BlackBerry smartphone
  • Calendar synchronization issues
  • Address Book synchronization issues
  • Global Address List (GAL) lookup issues

How to resend a service book


When resending service books, it is very important that you first delete all the DESKTOP service books before resending. Make sure that only the Service Books with the prefix of DESKTOP are removed. Depending on the version of BlackBerry Software installed on your device use one of the following instructions to delete a Service Book:

To resend service books to a BlackBerry smartphone from the BlackBerry smartphone

  1. Navigate to Options > Advanced Options > Service Book
  2. Highlight a Service Book
  3. Press the Menu button
  4. Choose Delete

  1. Navigate to Options > Device > Advanced System Settings > Service Book
  2. Highlight a Service Book
  3. Press the Menu button
  4. Choose Delete
Once deleted, you can resend them through HostPilot® Control Panel using the following instructions.

To resend service books to a BlackBerry® smartphone from BES
BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1

  1. In BlackBerry Manager, click the name of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  2. Select the User List tab.
  3. Perform one of the following steps:
    • To send a service book to a single smartphone, select the appropriate user account
    • To send a service book to multiple smartphones, select one of the appropriate user accounts, hold CTRL, and then select the others
    • To send a service book to all smartphones, select the first user account, hold Shift, and then select the last user account

  1. On the bottom panel, click IT Admin.
  2. Click Resend Service Book.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 or BlackBerry Business Cloud Services

  1. In the BlackBerry Administration Service, on the BlackBerry solution management menu, expand User.
  2. Click Manage users.
  3. Search for a user account.
  4. In the search results, click the personal identification number (PIN) that is associated with the smartphone.
  5. In the Communications list, click Resend service books to a device.
